The figures in these composite images are taken from one context and placed in a new setting, still surrounded by a bit of their former environment. I am interested here in the idea of displacement and the varying degrees to which it is possible to “fit in”. The pictures were made in 1978-80, when I was working in the California film industry doing optical printing, a technology which involved the precise combination of diverse elements to create illusion through the use of mattes. With the rough torn-paper mattes used to make these pictures, I explored what happens when the illusion is not quite complete.
Original C-prints are 11" x 14".
